With some of the best water villas, Angsana Velavaru is located in Dhaalu atoll, Maldives in 35 minutes by seaplane from Velana airport. With magnificent white beaches the resort is on the beautiful Velavaru island, which means "Turtle Island" and is surrounded by a picturesque lagoon with clear turquoise waters playing any shades of blue and green. Perfect for a honeymoon or other romantic getaway, as well as family vacation Angsana Velavaru Resort is not cheap, but a wonderful retreat for those with the finest of tastes. This 113-villa resort offers 79 island villas and 34 InOcean Villas, revealing spectacular views and direct access to the Indian Ocean.

In October 2019 Angsana Velavaru Maldives, part of Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts’ collection of private island resorts, completed a multi-million dollar renovation and expansion by enhancing the product offering of this iconic resort. The new look of Velavaru features an appealing combination of chic and vibrant elements inspired by Maldivian art creating a distinctive style that is evident at every touch point of the Angsana brand.

Angsana Velavaru

The Island

The completion of the new 324sqm main pool at Kuredhi beach is a spectacular addition to Angsana Velavaru. Guests now have the opportunity to take in endless sunsets whilst sipping cocktails in the modern in pool lounges or contemporary submerged cabanas, whilst kids can play freely in the kids pool.

The new Beach Front Infinity Pool Villas now feature a 15sqm plunge pool overlooking the ocean, and are all equipped with stylish facilities, light interiors and chic furnishings with Maldivian inspired decor.

The refurbished villas also feature private and spacious rear gardens with circular shaped decks and stylish bathtubs. The panoramic views of the turtle shaped villas lead to the very large front terrace where you can either laze on a sun bed or contemplate the wonderful view of the unique island lagoon.

Maldivian inspired al fresco dining concept Magoo Garden adds to the diverse dine-around experience, with the resort now offering up to five restaurants, offering Mediterranean fine dining at overwater restaurant and bar Azzurro, lobster menus at Funa restaurant and bar, all-day dining at Kaani restaurant and pool menus at Kuredhi restaurant, bar and gallery.

Angsana Velavaru - snorkeling

The beach is beautiful and wide, sand is fine, although at times it naturally moves around the island and near Deluxe Beachfront Pool Villa in particular spots of erosion can be seen at certain times of the year. In the lagoon there is a good house reef, snorkeling should more than satisfy the first timers, but there is no access to the drop off from the beach. With the construction of new Ocean Villas, however, now there is access to the western part of the house reef, which was previously inaccessible. You can simply board one of the boats that cruise once per hour and from the jetty down the steps into the water, then slowly drift to the edge of the reef. Marine life in this part is diverse and abundant with large schools of trevally, tuna and other pelagics, and clouds of red-tooth trigger-fish.

Although the snorkelling area is not very long it is not crowded for most of the day, as many ocean villas are occupied by Chinese guests, who are generally not strong swimmers and prefer to explore coral frames and blocks that were artificially grafted into the lagoon. For this reason the diving base is not as busy as it used to be, although there are a lot of great dive sites around. The water sports center on the other hand is usually busy than most other facilities and has a huge offer of non-motorized and motorized water sports.

About two-thirds of the guests from China and another 10 percent from Hong Kong and Korea. Almost everybody come on "bed & breakfast", and this choice can lead to a quiet restaurant with a set menu, where sometimes the choice of dishes is prepared rather than buffets. Often, this is however the best way to dine, as the chefs can focus their skills on a particular menu. Also on the resort's offer there is an All-Inclusive plan and a full board.

The service here is excellent if you have already had the pleasure of staying at the Banyan Tree and Angsana hotels. Angsana Velavaru is very special, in our opinion a resort is made by the staff, and on this island there is something exceptional. Very quickly, you feel as though you have made real friends, and it actually makes leaving quite difficult. When the staff appear to be one big family, and you are welcomed in, it is rare. Each soul is full of smiles and is always ready to help with anything.

Location

Dhaalu Atoll, a relatively unspoilt atoll of the Maldives archipelago, also known as South Nilandhe Atoll or Nilandhe Atholhu Dhekunuburi, is located 150 km southwest of the Maldives capital - the city of Male. The perfect tropical paradise of Dhaalu, separates from North Nilandhe (Faafu) atoll, the Kandu Dheburieytherey strait. Read More...

The resort is a 45-minute seaplane flight or a 30-minute domestic flight and 40 minute speed boat journey from Male. Proceed to the Angsana's counter at the airport when you arrive. Meedhoo Island (local island) is 5-minute journey by speedboat. Whale Shark Point is 1-hour trip by speedboat.

Villas

There are two different types of accommodation to choose from in Angsana Velavaru: beachfront stay in the classic thatched villas of the original resort, or a luxurious over-water experience in the huge and new charming Ocean Villas majestically drifting in the lagoon, and unattached to the island.

Featuring 33 water villas in addition to 79 additional villas on the main island, this resort is unusual in that the water villas are nearly a full kilometer out into the lagoon, connected only by a ferry that frequently goes back and forth.

The original beach rooms go in pairs, sharing round rondaweli with thatched roofs. Private life is kept on the veranda thanks to the dividing fence. However, the neighboring rondaweli are only a few meters apart. The rooms, which were once of medium size, now seem relatively small, although the curve shape is the long-awaited escape from the rectangle in most rooms, and the Angsana style stands out for distinctive, new and attractive interiors.

To the rear of the villas was added a walled garden to offer a more private vibe and there is a jacuzzi and a rain shower. Inside everything is integral and attractive, but a walk around the island will push you to the types of concrete blocks that detract from soft, round straw originals. Additionally, far away from the main island were built 18 ocean villas with a swimming pool, but, again, these are large living spaces, especially the wide sundeck around the large pool. DOWNLOAD RESORT MAP

Cluster InOcean Villas are not only separated from the island by water, but also by prices. This is the top-accomodation experience in the Maldives. These villas rank highest in the categories of water bungalows in the country, and have their own massage parlor and a private restaurant with breathtaking views. The interior of the villas is wide, not long and using a partition can separate the living area from the bedroom and from the bathroom. Each villa has a large swimming pool, no less attractive than the room itself, plus an excellent privacy.

An ocean-suspended hammock, an infinity pool constructed over crystal-clear ocean waters, a huge bathtub set by glass walls allowing you an endless view of the ocean and a rooftop pavilion make this Maldives overwater bungalow experience absolutely extraordinary. The rooftop pavilion doubles as a sala for In-Villa spa treatments and a wooden poolside deck gives you space to sit and watch underwater life moving right under your villa in Maldives. Spacious sunbeds give couples the chance for romantic privacy and families will love the enormous living space, built with full-length glass doors for natural sunlight.

Restaurants and Bars

Enjoy Maldivian, Asian and international favourites, while you watch the sun set over the Indian Ocean. The resort's three lovely Maldives restaurants will take care of you with great food and friendly, relaxed service. On the main island they have a different themed evening each night and the chefs are happy to make whatever you'd like if you give them enough notice.

Spoil your taste buds with fresh ocean picks at the overwater Funa restaurant, or sample international delights at Kaani. Drop in at Kuredhi bar for an exotic cocktail or two as the stars sneak into the sky.Wine and dine in the privacy of your villa, or savour romantic moments with dinner on the beach. Take off to a secluded island with a picnic basket, where powder white sand and turquoise waters set the stage for an unforgettable experience amidst the natural splendour of the Maldives.

Funa Restaurant reopened its doors in late 2021 with a revamped menu inspired by the brand’s Asian Roots. Read more

The Italian restaurant and the Azzurro bar are an amazing place, with a large over-water deck with the best ocean's views. The menu features quality Mediterranean cuisine, that if you want, can be tasted in Chinese style.

We reccommended the all inclusive meal plan and nice to be able to enjoy interesting drinks and cocktails. Some things are not included though such as fresh coconuts.

The bar and restaurant staff are lovely - especially in the main island bar and the in ocean restaurant and bar.

In 2023 Angsana Velavaru Maldives announced its fortified “101 Things To Do”, a wide array of resort activities that extend far beyond the traditional sun, sand, and sea experience – catering to a spectrum of interests, from cultural explorations and thrilling adventures to well-being experiences, culinary delights, and opportunities to make a positive impact with “Stay For Good” initiatives.

For couples seeking something more adventurous for an adrenaline rush, there’s a lot of activities to choose from including a wide range of motorised and non-motorised sports including sit-down hydrofoiling, a new water sport that creates a feeling akin to flying across the water. Other adventures include the use of hydro bikes and paddle bikes, kite flying, wake boarding, knee boarding, mono skiing and marine exploration in a glass bottom canoe.

The resort’s azure lagoon is the playground for water games such as waboba, a new take on the frisbeewhich isused for play in waist-high water, as well as classic favourites such as water polo and aqua volleyball. Guests who prefer to soak in the sun while getting a little exercise can participate in cricket, football, volleyball and petanque on the lagoon’s white sand beach.

For those interested in giving back, the programmes organised by Angsana Velavaru’s Marine Conservation Lab are a prime place to begin. Guests can participate in coral planting to replenish damaged reefs and snorkelling trips to learn about the abundant marine ecosystem and coral gardens found in and around the lagoon.

With its proximity to several vibrant dive sites, Angsana Velavaru is the ideal location for novice to experienced divers. Certified instructors at the PADI Gold Palm 5-Star dive centre offer different courses and excursions to explore the pristine waters of South Nilandhe Atoll. Divers can get up close and personal with white tip reef sharks, eagle rays, turtles and whale sharks, among other exotic species.

Resort guides offer guests tips on how to fish for red snapper, grouper, jack fish, rainbow runners and sea bass for those looking to catch their own dinner. Further afield, guests can test their endurance with big local game while deep sea fishing.

A Champagne-fuelled sunset cruise or a private island picnic on an isolated sandbank sets the stage for romance. What sets Angsana Velavaru apart as the quintessential wedding and honeymoon destination in the Maldives? It is the harmonious blend of elements that come together to create an unforgettable experience.

Couples looking to celebrating their special day at Angsana Velavaru can choose from five different wedding themes that showcase the natural beauty of the destination. Saying “I Do” has never been more romantic or unforgettable with various venues available: at sunset on the beach, on a nearby uninhabited island, on adhoni (traditional Maldivian boat), under the full moon, and even underwater.

The new collaboration between Angsana Velavaru and Maldives Artist Community (MAC) further enhances the local cultural experience and brings an array of art events such as painting classes and art workshops. With MAC’s permanent art exhibition at Kuredhi bar, guests will have the opportunity to purchase the art works and with their contribution, support the local artist community.

Reviews

Reviews for the Angsana Velavaru Resort are generally excellent, especially for those who've stayed in the Ocean Villas. Many guests stayed for a period of time on the main island, and another period of time in one of the water villas, and nearly everyone says the overwater accomodation are far nicer and generally the way to go. The service, staff, rooms, facilities, and food all get very high marks from nearly every reviewer, especially (once again) from those who stayed mostly in the overwater section of the resort.

“Absolutely Fantastic!”, “Amazing!”,
“the perfect romantic place for honeymooners to have a honeymoon they will never forget”, “Pure perfection”, “Very relaxing and memorable”, “Best beach experience ever ”, “Not bad”, “Wonderful location for family fun”, “A pleasent stay in a very wonderful resort.”, “Fantastic and unforgettable stay at Angsana”, “Great hotel, great staff. Separate bungalows...different”
